Probably the most famous sculpture by Günter Grass is the more than two meter high work Butt im Griff, created after a smaller clay model (approx. 52 cm) from 1982. A raised right hand holds a Butt in the air. The flatfish is one of the central motifs of Günter Grass's artistic work and not least the main character of his novel of the same name, published in 1977. In the Low German fairy tale “Von dem Fischer un syner Fru” the flounder fulfills a fisherman and his wife's wishes out of gratitude until they become more and more immoderate and in the end both of them lose all previous achievements. With this the flounder exhorts people to be humble in order to keep the world worth living in.

The sculpture in the courtyard of the Günter Grass house is one of several casts and versions. It was set up in 2002 for the opening of the exhibition house. There are others in Behlendorf, the artist's last place of residence, in Göttingen and in Sonderborg. Version II with a height of 1.30 meters shows a more delicate left hand.

Günter Wilhelm Grass was born on October 16, 1927 in Danzig-Langfuhr. The 1999 Nobel Prize for Literature became internationally known in 1959 with his debut novel "The Tin Drum".
Above all, he was a critical and criticized writer as well as politically active and belonged to the group of writers "Gruppe 47", which brought together renowned writers and literary critics from 1947 to 1967 and was important for the development of German-language literature in the post-war period.
From his own point of view, however, the multi-talented was primarily a trained sculptor, draftsman and graphic artist. From 1948–1952 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, later he moved to Berlin and from 1953–1956 took lessons from the sculptor Karl Hartung at the Academy of Fine Arts.
He lived in Paris until 1959, then in Berlin-Friedenau, in Wewelsfleth in Schleswig-Holstein and in Hamburg.
In 1987 he moved to Behlendorf near Ratzeburg, where he lived until his death. Drawings and literature are closely interwoven. Many of his graphics, presented in numerous exhibitions, illustrate his novels, stories and poems at the same time.
His motifs included butt, toad, snail or self-portraits with a pipe, as well as Rättin, Oskar Matzerath or the illustration to “Andersen's fairy tale”. His sculptures of the "Flounder", "The rats practicing the upright gait" or the various dance motifs of the enthusiastic dancer in particular testify to his weakness for the implementation of his ideas and visions in a multidimensional and haptic form of art.
Günter Grass died on April 13, 2015 in Behlendorf. To honor his work, the Günter Grass House was built in Lübeck while he was still alive.
