Germany was divided for almost 40 years. The inner-German border was closely guarded with high walls, barbed wire and watchtowers. This allowed nature to live: the border strip became a habitat for more than 1,200 rare and endangered plant and animal species. The BUND has created one of the largest and most important nature conservation projects here since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

If you hike along the P12 in a clockwise direction, then when you reach the Green Belt and the Kolonnenweg up here, you have left the steepest section behind you at the same time.
On the one hand, you can feel the depressing history of the inner-German division and at the same time you are fascinated by nature, which has meanwhile reclaimed the living space here.
