    The Edelacker legend is depicted here on the old city wall as a metal silhouette. It tells of Landgrave Ludwig II, who harnessed disobedient noblemen he had captured to a plough and had them plow a field below Neuenburg Castle. This piece of land has since been called Edelacker.

        The legend of Edelacker
        Landgrave Ludwig II, who was later nicknamed "the Iron Man", was a very mild and kind gentleman at the beginning of his reign, just and lenient towards everyone.
        At Ruhla, in a forest forge, he was "hard forged". Ludwig took the words of the blacksmith very much to heart and from that moment on became strict and serious in his nature, also looked everywhere for what was right, eased the pressure of the nobles, punished the unjust and forced the obstinate to obey.

          Some knights and nobles didn't want to suffer that. So it came to a fight, Ludwig defeated them with his army and took them captive to his castle near Freyburg, the Neuenburg. There he had them stand before him, first punished them with harsh words, but then he led them to a field in front of the castle, found a plow there too, and harnessed the disobedient nobles four each, clad only in their shirts, in front of them and plowed a furrow with them as one usually did with horses. The servants wielded the plough, while the landgrave struck down the harnessed nobles with his scourge, driving them on so that they had to bend and often fell to the ground.

              But the landgrave had the field surrounded by white stones as an eternal memorial, and to this day it is called "The Edelacker".
              But he won many secret enemies among the nobles, including from their children and friends. Since then he always wore an iron armor under his clothes. That's why he was called the "iron landgrave".
