The Tour de Constance was built from 1242 in Aigues-Mortes, by Saint Louis, on the former site of the Tour Matafère, built by Charlemagne around 790, to accommodate the king's garrison.
This construction is part of the transformation of Aigues-Mortes into a strategic point with a port opening onto the Mediterranean Sea.

Impressive and steeped in history, the Constance Tower is undoubtedly one of the jewels of Aigues-Mortes. Majestic and imposing, it proudly overlooks the city walls. One cannot help but be impressed by its massive silhouette and thick walls that seem to defy time.

This place is not just a monument: it is a silent witness to history, having served as a prison, particularly for Protestant women during the Wars of Religion. The interior exudes a poignant and mysterious atmosphere that invites reflection.

From the summit, the view of the salt marshes and the Camargue landscapes is breathtaking. If you enjoy historical sites with a strong identity, a visit to the Constance Tower is a must.
