The monks of Psalmodi became the first guardians of the tower because of the neighborhood. They took care of its maintenance and conservation. They withdrew a toll. This right must have provided large revenues when we consider that the tower, built at the end of a long causeway resting on a series of bridges, was the only way to get to Aigues-Mortes by land. It is impossible for travelers to avoid it, the road passing through the middle of the monument through a large door open to all winds.
