This temple was called, for a time, Santa María de Mata (mentioned in 1345), probably because of the image of the Virgin that was on the altar, next to that of San Martín. There are several documented reforms. In 1581, in 1767 according to an inscription on the side wall «YEAR MDCCLXVII SE mend» in which the baroque altar was built.

In 1926 part of the roof collapsed and the baroque altar looked pitiful. In 1933 it was in a dilapidated state, without a roof and the walls were about to fall. The owner, Pablo Schleicher consolidated and redid the roof. Other people from the neighborhood and the Mataró Scientific-Excursionist Association collaborated in restoring the baroque altarpiece that, with the images, was burned during the civil war (1936-1939). In 1955 the walls, the roof, the pavement and the now stone altar were rebuilt. The archaeologist Marià Ribas y Bertran carried out excavations. In 1976 several burials were found and documented.
