The old courthouse and prison was designed in 1892 by the architect HC Amberg. It has shaped Esbjerg with its checkered history. Without the sustained commitment of the city's citizens, the house would never have been built. Entrepreneurs bought the land, and as early as the 1870s, people were pushing for permission to build a courthouse and prison.
Today you can get married here and the tourist information is on the ground floor.

For your wedding in Esbjerg, the old town hall in the town center on the market (Torvet) provides the setting.

Esbjerg Ting- og Arresthus (old town hall in Esbjerg) dates from 1892 and was used for official purposes until 1983. The building was then listed and used for other purposes. Parts of the building were used as a prison until 1947, and the last inmate was released in the same year.

During the Second World War, the German occupying power used the building for their own purposes, and many Danish freedom fighters were imprisoned here.
The prison cells are still there and are on the other side of the building.
