ハイキング
The heathland and siltation are also a result of slash-and-burn agriculture, overgrazing and pest-cutting by the people who have settled here since the Bronze Age. The name refers to its function as communal land in the Middle Ages. The residents of 14 surrounding villages used the area collectively to produce firewood or as pasture for livestock. The infertile sandy soil prevented large-scale cultivation for a long time. In Napoleonic times around 1807, the land was transferred to state ownership and divided into long, straight parcels, which can still be seen in the paths and borders today.

The Meinweg is always worth a hike. There are practically no roads going through this huge forest and heath area. There's a lot to discover here.
