Kannikegården, immediately south of the cathedral, was inaugurated in January 2016. It is named after an original monastery for the so-called canons, who in Catholic times constituted the major priesthood of the Church and their diverse functions – from celebrating masses to bookkeeping.

Extensive excavations from 2008 to 2013 revealed that Denmark's earliest known Christian burial site was located on this site.

In Kannikegården, you can visit the museum "The Early Christians" and view the excavated ruins of the original Kannikegård, where the walls of the dining hall have been preserved.

The modern Kannikegård was built between 2014 and 2016 and designed by Lundgaard & Tranbjerg Architects, who won the 2012 competition for a new building in this historic and very special urban space. In addition to the large room for the museum and ruins, the 726 m² building includes offices and meeting rooms for approximately 10 employees, as well as a larger meeting and assembly room, the Langgaard Room, named after the composer and cathedral organist from 1940 to 1952, Rued Langgaard (1893-1952). The museum and ruins are open to the public, but the rest of the building is not, except for special events.
