    The name 'La Romieu' first appears in writings in 1082. Arnaud d'Aux was born in this village in 1265 and was made cardinal in 1312. He had the Collegiale de La Romieu built for his native region.

      The complex (now protected by Unesco) is in very good condition and can be visited almost entirely. From the sun-drenched courtyard through the church to the open tower that can be climbed. Via a narrow stone spiral staircase you enter various rooms and eventually even on the roof of the church itself. The roof construction is beautiful to see and there is of course a fantastic view of the surroundings

          The cloister of the collegiate church of Saint-Pierre de la Romieu is definitely worth seeing.
          A light-filled cloister from the 14th century. The upper floor was destroyed in the religious wars and later demolished. But that's why this cloister is so bright and attractive. Eight Gothic arcades, each decorated with a rosette and a half, are on each of the 4 sides.

            The mighty collegiate church of La Romieu has many of the stylistic elements of a castle. On the cloister side there are 2 towers and on the eastern side there is a powerful octagonal tower.
            This church was built in a record time of just 4 years from 1313-1318 by Cardinal Arnaud d'Aux, who was born in La Romieu.
