This is one of those places in the Lakes where you really feel as though you're in true mountain country. Windy Gap, a col between Gables Green and Great, is an exciting place to be. This is especially so if you've got the rocky clamber to the summit of Great Gable, arguably Lakeland's finest fell, still to come. The col also gives you superb views right down the barrel of Ennerdale, with Pillar towering on the left and the High Stile ridge on the right.

What is the typical distance and time required for a challenging hike involving Windy Gap?

While Windy Gap itself is a col, it's usually part of a longer route.
