The portal and the loggia are a showpiece of Renaissance architecture in the Upper Rhine.

Based on the former Saint-Jacques chapel (first mentioned in 1286), which served for a time as the town hall, the building was built in 1575 for secular purposes. Above a vaulted ossuary, the guard was on the ground floor and the halls were on the upper floor. The loggia, which was built between 1577 and 1582, with its highly decorative repertoire, together with the portal, forms a jewel of Renaissance architecture in the Upper Rhine.

The building was also used for commercial purposes. It was the location for the nut and oilseed market and the place of justice. The loggia was used as a platform for the judges during the pronouncement of sentences. From 1860 the building served as the office of the military quarters and later as a police station.

The Gardehof was created in 1575 from the old St. Jakob chapel. The crypt with ossuary from the 13th century was completely preserved. Remains of the chapel can still be seen on the ground floor today. Rooms for the guards were created on the ground floor and state rooms on the upper floor. The most striking decoration is the Renaissance aedicula of the portal, whose gable decoration is cranked with the console of the bay window above. The open bay window with Corinthian columns and vaulted ceiling was originally used for city council announcements. On the west side, an open columned hall with a pointed arch was created as a passage. After 1860, the building was used by the police, later by the city and region's administrative units.
