Celtic wall

In the late Hallsteinzeit, in the 6th century BC, the Limberg was developed into a permanent castle. You can see the remains of the outer protective wall, which today also forms the boundary between Gisingen and Oberlimberg; this sealed off the Limberg precisely at its narrow land bridge to the Gauplateau. Two further trenches and ramparts protected the tongue-shaped mountain range of the Limberg towards the Gauplatte. On the border with the area of the older Hunsrück-Eifel culture, Limberg was the prince seat of the western Späthallstatt culture, which is ascribed to the early Celts. Celtic wall

In two excavation periods, the former state curator of the Saarland, Reinhard Schindler, explored the three walls of the Celtic hilltop castle, which are clearly visible above ground. The scientists went to work in 1964 and 1965, driving excavation cuts through the ramparts. Wall 3 - located at the tip of the Limberg above Wallerfangen - contained the remains of at least two, maybe three collapsed fortress walls. The shards of the older wall came from the older Hallstatt period (approx. 760 - 620 BC) and the rubble of the walls erected later contained clay material from the later Hallstatt period (approx. 620 - 480 BC). Shards and animal bones are evidence of permanent settlement on the fortified Limberg height. More information - Historical Museum Wallerfangen.
