      The Hockstein is 292 m high and from above you can see the Polenz valley, which is about 115 m lower. Hohenstein Castle is on the opposite side.

        The Hockstein is a sandstone rock in the Saxon Switzerland National Park with a small but varied summit. There is a covered rest hut and a railing-protected view of the Polenztal and Hohnstein. The climb over the Devil's Bridge is very easy and can also be done by children and dogs. The adventurous climb through the Wolfsschlucht is a little more difficult and requires surefootedness. On the Hockstein there are still traces of an old medieval castle in the form of a 15-meter-long and 2.5-meter-high earthen rampart.

          A beautiful gorge leads to the viewing platform of the Hockstein with a number of stairs and steps. At times it is very narrow, at other times it is wider, and several times it goes around the corner into the crevices in the rock. That makes it very exciting and is definitely an experience! If you don't dare to do that, you can also hike from above via other hiking trails over a stone bridge to the viewing point. There is also a nice shelter at the top if you are surprised by a bad weather front or simply to enjoy the food you brought with you. From the viewing platform you have a great view of Hohenstein Castle opposite and the Polenztal. It's worth planning a detour to the Hockstein!

The transition from the Lusatian thrust to the sandstone is particularly clear here: granite upstream, sandstone downstream. The remains of a medieval fortification are located on the Hockstein. Today's stone bridge dates back to 1821 and is one of the first tourist structures in Saxon Switzerland.

                  The climb to Hockstein is an adventure in itself. The Wolfsschlucht captivates hikers with its narrow crevices and many stairs. Here the path sometimes leads through narrow crevices, sometimes around the corners of impressive rock formations - an exciting experience that increases the anticipation of the summit with every step. However, if you are looking for a less challenging route, we recommend the easy climb over the historic Devil's Bridge, which was built in 1821 and is therefore considered one of the first tourist structures in Saxon Switzerland.

                  Once at the top, the Hockstein rewards you with a breathtaking panoramic view. Hohenstein Castle stands proudly on the opposite side and seems to be within reach of the viewer. The Polenztal stretches out in all its splendor, a natural painting that invites you to linger and dream. A lovingly built shelter is available for protection from sudden changes in the weather or for a comfortable rest. Here you can enjoy the food you brought with you in peace and let your gaze wander.

                    Wonderful viewing point far away from the hustle and bustle around the Bastei Bridge. From the Hockstein you can look into the Polenztal and Hohnstein Castle.
                    Tip: Descend into the Polenztal via the narrow stairs in the narrow Wolfsschlucht.

                      The Hockstein is 291 meters high and you can see almost 100 meters deep into the Polenztal.
                      The descent from Hohenstein through the Wolfsschlucht is wonderful. The steps lead down the narrow rocky gorge with vertical rock walls on long, narrow steel stairs.

                          The striking Hockstein rises majestically above the Polenztal. From the summit of the Hockstein you have a panoramic view that is simply breathtaking. Enjoy the view over to the imposing Hohnstein Castle and down into the Polenztal.
                          As part of the Saxon Switzerland National Park, the Hockstein is not only an impressive natural wonder, but also a protected area that is worth exploring. Please remember that you are entering the core zone of the national park, where only marked paths may be used. On your way you will pass secured viewpoints and a small hiking hut, which is perfect for a leisurely rest, especially in bad weather.
                          From here, a well-signposted path leads you down through the picturesque Wolfsschlucht gorge via an impressive staircase into the Polenztal.

                                                The circular hike led me from Hohenstein Castle to the Gautsch grotto, then in the direction of Hockstein and via the Wolf Gorge directly to the Hockstein. The Gautsch grotto is impressively large and pleasantly cool at this time of year. I found the rocky plateau of the Hockstein very idyllic and from up there you have a wonderful view, especially of Hohenstein Castle. If you want, you can hike directly after the descent from the Hockstein via the Polenztal to Rathen to the Amselsee.
