Nobody likes to have their weaknesses, mistakes and vanity held up to them in a mirror, especially not by a fool. Till Eulenspiegel showed no mercy and in particular he denounced the ailing conditions of late medieval society. Self-satisfied citizens and the corrupt nobility, but also the church, were unmasked by him. The myth about Till Eulenspiegel and his numerous pranks has persisted for several hundred years, although evidence of his real existence is difficult to provide. The oldest edition of the Eulenspiegel book by the customs clerk and writer Hermann Bote dates from 1510.
