At the beginning of the 20th century, Cottbus was a rapidly growing city thanks to the textile industry and the desire for entertainment and high culture led in 1907 to the decision to build a theater. The construction costs were raised by the Cottbus citizens and patrons. After only 18 months of construction, in October 1908, the house was inaugurated with Lessing's play "Minna von Barnhelm". During the Second World War, the theater was used as an ammunition store. Its planned demolition at the end of the war was prevented by Cottbus citizens.
