Severin planned the palace as a home for himself and his family. However, he was urged shortly after completion to sell the house to the hereditary Grand Duke, later Grand Duke Paul Friedrich.

This was the grandson of the then ruling Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I. With the death of his father Friedrich Ludwig in 1819 he had become Erbherzog von Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The title Erbherzog corresponded to that of a hereditary prince, which led to the name Prinzenpalais. He married in 1822 Alexandrine of Prussia (1803-1892), after her is the forecourt of the palace Alexandrinenplatz. After the death of his grandfather in 1837 he became Grand Duke. Grand Duke Paul Friedrichs used the building occasionally as a summer residence (Only a few rooms on the upper floors could be heated until 1911, also parquet was not moved here until 1911), the Grand Duchess's widow Alexandrine is said to have occasionally lived here in old age.

In 1911, the building became a service center (on the ground floor) and a service apartment (upper floors) for the Drost of Doberan. Previously, Drost Baumann had used only the ground floor as a service apartment, the upper floors were often empty. In the rear building lived the coachman downstairs there was a stable for three horses and an apartment of the public servant. From 1928, after the dissolution of the rural Rostov-on-Don, the lower rooms were converted into lower-class classrooms of the neighboring Friderico-Francisceum Gymnasium. This school was renamed Goetheschule in 1947. The Goetheschule became the Johannes R. Becher secondary school in 1959. With the opening of the school complex on the north side of the Kamps, one of the new schools was named Johannes R. Becher and the school in the Prinzenpalais became the Lessing High School.

From 1994, the building was used as a youth house "Alex". In 2007 it was sold to private investors who opened the Hotel Prinzenpalais in July 2009.
