Olympic flame on La Gomera 1968
At the XIX 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico took a Gomero and the Olympic flame visited the island.
On 23 August 1968, the Olympic flame was ignited in Olimpia, Greece, the torch came over Italy and various cities in Spain like Barcelona, Madrid and Seville in the Canary Islands. The torch traveled on the corvette "Princesa" of the Spanish fleet to Las Palma de Gran Canaria, where it arrived on 14 September. From there she made her way to Columbus Island.
The Olympic flame reached San Sebastian de La Gomera on 16 September 1968 and was brought by a number of local athletes to a shell on El Roquillo, Playa de la Cueva. Among the participating athletes, however, was not the only Olympian from La Gomera of the Games in Mexico, the boxer Antonio Marcos Chinea. At the end of the ceremony, the Olympic delegation presented a torch to commemorate this event.
Directly from La Gomera the flame traveled on the "Princesa" towards San Salvador and from there to México Distrito Federal.
The sculptor Ezequiel de León was commissioned to record the moment of passage of the torch, this monument known as "Antorcha" (Torch) was installed at the site of the ceremony.
In 2005, the monument was damaged and removed for repair for about a year, since 2006 it is back in place.
