Parrocchia di San Vittore Martire, Isola Bella
This church was originally a ninth century chapel which retains the small original apse as a chapel. It was possibly a dependent of the Abbey of San Donato in Sesto Calende and was st. Dedicated to Gandolfo.
In the 1600s, the Borromeo family demolished an old church dedicated to St. Vittorio to add to their gardens
to build. They brought the remains of the saint to the present location on Isola Pescatori. This church was expanded in the Gothic and Renaissance style in 1627 when the original apse became a simple chapel and was dedicated to St. Vittore. Inside there are preserved frescoes and the high altar from the seventeenth century with the busts of the four bishops - St. Ambrose of Milan, St.
Gaudentius of Novara, St. Franz von Sales and St. Charles Borromeo - typical of the Ambrosian cult. St. Vittorio's relics, which consist of an urn supposedly containing his bones, are under the altar.
Vittorio was a soldier at the time of the Emperor Diocletian
lived. He was killed by beheading in AD 303. He was especially venerated in Milan, where a mosaic inscription in the chapel dedicated to the saint in the Ambrosian basilica tells the story of his life.
