The church is dedicated to St. Martin of Tours, who refused to serve as a Roman soldier in Worms in the 4th century before a battle against the Germanic tribes. According to legend, the church stands on the site of the dungeon where Martin was thrown for his conscientious objection. [1] The oldest mention of the church is in a deed of donation of Emperor Otto III. obtained from the end of the 10th century. The church served as a collegiate church of the collegiate of the same name. It was also an early burial place of the treasurer of Worms and their best-known family branch, that of Dalberg, whose two townhouses were located in the immediate vicinity in the Kämmerergasse. [2]

The church was heavily damaged in the Palatinate War of Succession by troops of King Louis XIV, almost all the equipment was lost. The reconstruction took place in the Baroque style.

1802, the Martinsstift was dissolved with the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss, the church building then continues to be used today as a Roman Catholic parish church.

Under the parish priest and honorary citizen of Worms Nikolaus Reuss (1809-1890) took place between 1872 and 1887, an interior and exterior renovation. Inside, medieval murals were discovered and restored in the course of the measure. The baroque high altar was replaced by a new, neo-Romanesque style. The interior design of the late 19th century was completed by a painting by Otto Linnemann, which is no longer available today.

During the air raids on Worms on October 4, 1943 and February 21, 1945, the St. Martin's Church was heavily damaged again. The reconstruction took place in 1946/47. In 1950, the late-Gothic porch, which joined the Martinskirche and the originally adjacent Lampertikirche, broken off. [5]
