The Frauenkirche is a Gothic hall church with a west tower and a ribbed vaulted polygonal choir with a 5/8 end in the east. According to Gerhard Leutrum von Ertingen, it was built as a pilgrimage chapel in the 13th century and expanded in the 14th century by the Lords of Riexingen. The nave was enlarged and fitted with buttresses, and the chancel and tower were added. It served as a parish church until the chapel in the village was expanded around 1628, and then primarily as a burial place for the local noble families. The tombstone for Friedrich Osterbronn von Riexingen († 1394) in the middle of the chancel is the oldest preserved tombstone in the Frauenkirche. It is considered an indication that the noble family of Riexingen, who also provided the first known church owner with Heinrich von Riexingen in 1379, had the church extended. Today's name as Frauenkirche goes back to the patronage of Our Lady (Mary).

Up until the Reformation, the church, also popularly known as “s'Käppele”, was also used for pilgrimages. Among other things, there are reports of a pilgrim monk from Hungary. The inner walls of the almost windowless hall were decorated with frescoes, which mainly depicted scenes from the Last Judgment. In addition, there were several altars in the church, including the gilded altar of Our Lady.
