Historic Wurstkuchl in Regensburg

Do you think a fast food restaurant can't be from ancient times? Then visit the historic Wurstkuchl in Regensburg.

The “Local” has been around for over 500 years. The forerunner of this building was built around 1146 as a construction office for the Stone Bridge. When the construction was completed, it became the “food stall on the crane”. The word “Kranchen” means crane, as the food stall was located not far from the harbor. But it wasn't just a popular destination for dock workers, the hungry construction workers at St. Peter's Cathedral were also regular guests here for centuries.

Around 1800, people switched from boiled meat to bratwursts. This delicious specialty is still grilled over open charcoal here today. There is also sauerkraut with an excellent mustard. Even though there are often queues, you shouldn't miss this culinary delight. Here you will have the opportunity to enjoy the historic buildings of Regensburg with a classic Regensburg meal directly on the Danube.

The origin of the historic Wurstkuchl was a small building leaning against the city wall, which was used as a construction office during the construction of the stone bridge from 1135 to 1146. When the building, celebrated at the time as the eighth wonder of the world, was completed, the construction office moved out and the small building became the "cookshop on the little church". The patrons of the cookshop were harbor and construction workers, hence the name "Kranchen," the word for cranes or cranes. There were many dockers because the wealthy trading patrons of the Free Imperial City of Regensburg used the port intensively for centuries as a hub for goods from all over the world.
