At 78 hectares, the Leipzig South Cemetery is the largest cemetery in Leipzig and is rightly considered one of the largest and most beautiful park cemeteries in Germany. In 2016, the southern cemetery was 130 years old and the birthday was honored with cultural events and a variety of guided tours and lectures 1885-1887) and garden director Otto Wittenberg (1834-1918) with the path in the form of a linden leaf.
The designers thus referred to Leipzig's Slavic original name "The place where the linden trees stand" and created a total work of art in accordance with the Art Nouveau objective.
The crematorium built by Otto Wilhelm Scharenberg between 1907 and 1909 forms the center of the southern cemetery. Together with two smaller chapels and the large main hall, this building forms a complex that can be seen from afar through the 63 m high bell tower. The eastern chapel was kept in the shape of a cross and, like the main chapel, was mainly used for denominational funeral services. The western chapel was designed as an oratory and was used for secular celebrations.
In its structural conception, the whole of the complex was modeled on the Benedictine monastery of Maria Laach.
The floor plans of all funeral halls resemble a Greek cross.
The surrounding corridors and arcades connect the various sections of the neo-Romanesque building.
The chapel complex is divided into three mourning halls, the mourning hall east, mourning hall west and large mourning hall, as well as farewell rooms, urn handover room, the columbarium, which has been usable again since 2011, and the crematorium.
