Augustusplatz, one of Leipzig's central squares, covers 40,000 square meters and is home to important buildings such as the opera, the Gewandhaus, the Paulinum and the City-Hochhaus, which reflect different eras of the city's history. In addition to its architectural diversity, it serves as an event venue and houses historical monuments such as the Mendebrunnen and the Democracy Bell, which commemorates the decisive Monday demonstration on October 9, 1989.

In the autumn of 1989, what was then Karl-Marx-Platz became known nationwide as the site of mass protests against the GDR regime. A year later, it was renamed Augustusplatz. In 1998, a fundamental redesign took place with the construction of a basement for an underground car park (concept: Professor Bernhard Winkler). The main idea was to emphasize the axis between the opera and the Gewandhaus. In this context, the Mendebrunnen received a counterpart in the form of a fountain in the northern half of the square. The contiguous square area was greatly reduced, but paved with high-quality natural stone materials. Newly planted rows of linden trees are reminiscent of the original promenade plantings. The lighting concept includes the round structures of underground car park entrances with outer walls made of frosted glass, which are illuminated at night. With the new construction of the main university building and a successor building to the university church, called the Paulinum, the architecture of the west side now gives the square character again.

Two of the city's most important cultural and musical venues are located on Augustusplatz:
The Leipzig Opera and the Gewandhaus concert hall.

In addition to the university, there is also the Panorama Tower (city high-rise) with the highest viewing platform on the 31st floor at a height of 120m and without any glass or lattice protection.

The "stiff tooth", as the giant is also called because of its shape, now houses the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (mdr) and a panorama restaurant.
