And then, on Wednesday morning, the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at the Keulsepoort suddenly disappeared. The reason: a thorough renovation of the statue, which had stood on its base almost continuously for 100 years. The statue only disappeared from its original place for a short time due to the damage during the Second World War.

The statue's transportation was an impressive event, said City Councilor Marij Pollux. On Wednesday morning, she was a keen observer. "Of course you're thinking: If only that goes well. But fortunately the conveyor belts were firmly connected to the outstretched arms and the rest of the Sacred Heart statue. For a moment it even seemed as if the statue was actually floating in the air .

The statue was created by artist August Falis in 1920. A year later, on June 5, 1921, the then Bishop Laurentius Schrijnen van Roermond unveiled the statue in the presence of Mayor van Rijn, among others, at the Cologne Gate. The heart of Jesus adorns the chest of the standing figure of Christ. The heart, which symbolizes the life and suffering of Christ and also serves as a safe haven, a kind of refuge. He is the one who watches over the people.

The Sacred Heart statue in Venlo is a statue by August Falise. From 1920, Falise created several statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on behalf of the Catholic Church. The standing figure of Christ is dressed in a robe and wrapped in a cloak. He raises both hands in blessing and shows the stigmata. On his chest is the Sacred Heart.
