In the Middle Ages, an alluvial fan was deposited at the end of the gorge towards the lake, on which hops were grown. The eponymous wolf disappeared in the region in the 1830s. The predator, which is strictly protected in Germany, was spotted again for the first time in 1991 near Bollersdorf to the west.

                    Anyone hiking through Märkische Schweiz will sooner or later end up in a landscape that looks more like a fairytale than Brandenburg: the Wolf's Gorge (Wolfsschlucht) – a 250-meter-long, shady hollow road that dug deep into the Brandenburg sand when meltwater and glaciers still ruled. Today, ferns, roots, and the artfully crossed trunks of fallen trees reign supreme. A natural cathedral of wood and light.

                    To the left, the flank of the Dachsberg, to the right, the descent to the Kleiner Tornowsee, and somewhere in between, a path that winds rather than leads. In the Middle Ages, hops were grown at the foot of the gorge – today, you're more likely to photograph mosses and children climbing. And sometimes, hikers marveling at it.

                    The wolf, for whom the gorge owes its name, has long since moved on – at least since the 1830s. But when dusk falls and the leaves rustle, you might turn around. Just to be safe.

                    If you're in the area, you shouldn't miss the gorge. And if you're coming during peak weekend season, it's best to be patient—or arrive early. Because this place is one of the most special. And word has gotten around.
