As part of the former city fortifications, the city gate with attached gatehouse was built after 1200. As a monument of urban development, it has been a listed building for many years and is part of the historic city complex. "Chiten" was first mentioned as a place in Geithain in 1186. In 1209 Geithain was granted town charter.

It has been a listed monument of urban planning for many years and is part of the historic city center. For the first time in Geithain 1186 with "Chiten" was mentioned as a place. In 1209 Geithain acquired city rights.

The city once had four city gates. Only the generally known as "city gate" or "gatehouse" gate is obtained. But there are other names: Altenburgertor, Niedertor, Untertor.
