During the reign of Augustus the Strong and his successor, the Electoral Postmile pillars were erected on all important post and trade routes and in almost all cities of the Electorate of Saxony to indicate the official distances. This should provide the basis for a consistent calculation of postal charges. Since the Electorate of Saxony at that time was much larger than the present state of Saxony, such pillars are also found in Thuringia, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt and Poland.
