Herthadalen is named after the fertility goddess Hertha, in whose honor the local farmers erected a statue. Every spring, the statue was placed on a leafy cart and carried around in fields, to fertilize the ground. After this, the goddess was to be washed in Knapsø, and the slaves who had served suffered the fate of being swallowed up by the lake.

Legend has it that young girls had to go out alone to Hertha's sacrificial site deep in the forest of Herthadalen. Here they were to wash her altar clean, and in that way they could make hopes of a fruitful life. Her altar was converted into a pulpit in the 1800s, from which it is said that the first constitutional speeches were given by N.F.S Grundtvig. The goddess' altar or pulpit is definitely worth a trip, so ask us for directions the next time you come by.
