The Old Market (Mercatus coloniae) was first mentioned in documents around the end of the 10th century. Back then, it wasn't like today, where every square was separate. There was a large square in the heart of the city, in the middle of which was the Old Market. One of the historic buildings, next to the town hall, is what is now the "Gaffel House".

Apples were traded there at the time, which is why it was given the name "Zur Britzele am Apfelmarkt". However, a lot more was traded here than just apples. In 1424, there is said to have been a pillory on the square, because in the 15th century the Old Market also served as a court and execution site, but also as a tournament ground. Emperor Maximilian is said to have fallen from his horse here in 1486... straight into the manure.

What was that like? Everyone got what they deserved? That's easy to say, he can't defend himself anymore. Speaking of defending himself. Another eye-catcher on the Alter Markt is the monument to General Jan von Werth, who went to the Thirty Years' War because of lovesickness and returned as a hero.
