The themed route “Fietsallee am Nordkanal” follows the “Grand canal du Nord” (or North Canal) once planned by Napoleon from Neuss on the Rhine to Nederweert in the Netherlands and connects the rivers Rhine and Maas as the planned waterway should once. The cycle route is divided into 55 kilometers on the German side and 48 kilometers on the Dutch side. The path is accompanied by a blue-green band as a floor marking, which is realized by edge posts on unpaved roads or in Dutch territory by boards on street lamps. Furthermore, red and white striped steles are attached to the roadside. These are reminiscent of the original course of the canal on site in the ground and are intended to symbolize the engineering skills of land and canal surveying at the time. Overall, this is intended to illustrate the engineering work that would have been necessary in the construction of a canal of this dimension. Various information points along the way explain the meaning, history and functionality of the North Canal. Back then - the unfinished canal
