If you approach from the station Campolide on foot this building, which spans the Alcantara Valley at 60m altitude, that is already impressive. From the top you have for 3 or 4 euros a great view over the valley.
If you follow the aqueduct, there are other interesting sights, such as reservoirs above and below ground, as well as a subterranean track, which you can visit after signing up.
A corresponding leaflet is available at the very friendly "porter" at the entrance to the Alcantara bridge.
Regrettably, you can only change the side on the bridge in two places. And unfortunately you do not come to Monsanto at the end of the building.

Admission is now €4 (€2 reduced). Of course you can see the aqueduct without going inside, but there are other perspectives on parts of the city from above.

The Free Waters Aqueduct (Aqueduto das Águas Livres) is one of Lisbon's most impressive engineering works and a symbol of Portuguese Baroque architecture.
It was built in the 18th century by order of King João V, who financed the project through taxes on basic goods such as meat, wine, and oil.
The original design was the work of architect Antonio Canevari, with the participation of Carlos Mardel and other engineers.
