The Santa Justa Elevator, also known as the Carmo Elevator, is one of Lisbon's most iconic monuments and a must-see experience for visitors.
Opened in 1902, it was designed by engineer Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard, a disciple of Eiffel.
It is the only vertical elevator in Lisbon, while others, such as the Glória and Bica, are funiculars.

An artfully designed elevator in the middle of Lisbon that connects two districts: Baixa (Lower Town) with Chiado and Bairro Alto (Upper Town). The Elevador de Santa Justa is a 45 meter high steel tower, richly decorated in the neo-Gothic style.
The elevator is also called Elevador do Carmo (Carmo Elevator) because it leads directly to the Convento do Carmo. Its upper entrance is at the small square Largo do Carmo, the lower stop is near Rossio and the Baixa-Chiado metro station on Rua Santa Justa.

Two historically beautiful, wood-paneled cabins with windows and brass fittings rise up. Each cabin can accommodate 24 people. You can mainly see the scaffolding through the windows during the journey, which makes the view from the upper station all the more beautiful: once you get there, you can climb two more floors on foot via iron spiral stairs: the machines that drive the elevator are located above the exit . A little higher on the roof of the lift there is a viewing platform with a café, although there is an entrance fee. But the view from the publicly accessible footbridge in front of the lift is also magnificent: from here you can see the Castelo de São Jorge opposite and over the roofs of the Baixa.
In 1902, the Elevador de Santa Justa was built by Gustave Eiffel's student Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard, who also designed the other Lisbon funiculars. Hence the similarities with the Paris Eiffel Tower in some places: iron was the building material around 1900, it symbolized progress and allowed for skilful decorations in the construction. In its first years, the passenger elevator was powered by steam engines; electric drives only came a little later. Until 2006, extensive construction work took place on the upper footbridge, which had to be closed for several years.

A lift ride is a 'must do' in Lisbon. Use is free with the Lisboa Card. And if you drive from top to bottom, the waiting time is much shorter 🙂

The elevator is a clear highlight. If you want to drive with him, you have to queue for longer. But if you just want to reach the platform. goes up from behind on foot.

The Elevador de Santa Justa, also known as Elevador do Carmo, is a passenger elevator that connects the Baixa district with the higher Chiado district in the city center of Lisbon. The striking steel structure was built in 1902 according to plans by the engineer Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard. The original drive was a steam engine, but this was replaced by electric motors in 1907.
The elevator is 45 m high and has two cabins originally decorated with wood and equipped with glass panes and brass fittings, each of which can accommodate 24 people. The two original lift machines can be seen in operation one floor above the upper exit. Another floor above is a café with a spectacular view of the city: Baixa, Chiado, Castelo de São Jorge.

Late in the afternoon, and since apparently nothing moved for 15 minutes, neither up nor down, we quickly decided to take a ride up in the e-tuktuk. At the top, the entrance to the elevator is even more beautiful than at the bottom, a beautiful square with cafes, the unrestored church of the Convento do Carmo (destroyed in the great earthquake of 1755) and lots of people who just seemed happy.
Going down is always easier than going up... so we were able to do it on foot again

The 45 meter high elevator connects the upper Tejo district with the lower part of the city and offers breathtaking views of the city. The construction from 1902 is characterized by its neoclassical architecture and is a popular photo opportunity for tourists.

The Elevador de Santa Justa is not only a practical means of transportation, but also a historical structure with an interesting history. It was originally built to replace the city's difficult gradients, allowing residents and visitors to travel safely and comfortably from one part of the city to another.

Lisbon is known for its seven hills and charming trams, but the Elevador de Santa Justa offers a welcome change for anyone wanting a better overview of the city. The elevator is open daily and offers a cheap alternative to the city's expensive viewing platforms.

The Santa Justa Elevator connects Rua de Santa Justa and Largo do Carmo Square. It is the most famous viewpoint in the city center.

The elevator is part of Lisbon's public transport system, so a single ticket is sufficient for entry to the observation deck and one ride in the elevator.

Entry is also free with the Lisboa Card. The line at the bottom is usually very long. There are no skip-the-line tickets.

Alternatively, walk up the hill via Rua do Carmo, Rua Garret, and Calçada do Sacramento. These are among the most popular shopping streets in Lisbon anyway.

Then walk from the top of the elevator to the observation deck. Skip-the-line entry is possible there. You usually don't have to wait for the elevator ride down.
