The obelisk that you see on the market square is 11 meters high and was once the first public fountain in Ronse. Originally, the letter 'W' of King of the Netherlands 'Willem I' stood at the top of a crown on the sphere of the obelisk. After the independence of Belgium in 1830, it was removed and replaced by the Habsburg eagle, the city's coat of arms. Did you know that the crown is kept in the Spaniards Castle, but the letter 'W' has mysteriously disappeared...?

This 12m high bluestone monument dates from 1818 and served as a public fountain. At the top is the coat of arms of Ronse with the crowned two-headed Habsburg eagle.
