The Roman Catholic parish church of Wesenufer is located in Wesenufer in the municipality of Waldkirchen am Wesen in the Schärding district of Upper Austria. The church, dedicated to St. Wolfgang, belongs to the deanery of Peuerbach in the diocese of Linz. The church and the cemetery are listed buildings.
In 325, a chapel dedicated to St. Wolfgang in Wesenufer was first mentioned as a branch church of the parish of Waldkirchen am Wesen. There are no written records of the date of its construction and consecration. In the following centuries, the church was generously supported by benefactors and foundations. This also enabled a chaplain to be employed.

Since the responsible parish church in Waldkirchen am Wesen was far away, the people of Wesenufer aspired to have their own parish as early as the 18th century. This was not permitted by the episcopal ordinariate, and from 1748 onwards they were allowed to keep their own church records. In 1853, Wesenufer became a parish branch and received its own parish pastor. In 1891 Wesenufer was elevated to an independent parish. In 1899 the rectory was completed and consecrated by Bishop Franz Maria Doppelbauer.

In 1997 the interior of the church was renovated, at which time the organ was restored and the Stations of the Cross pictures were restored. In 2002 the outside of the church was renovated and the epitaphs were restored and attached to the church wall.

      PARISH CHURCH OF ST. WOLFGANG

From the history of the parish church of Wesenufer:

There is no historical evidence of the year in which a church was built and consecrated in the Danube town of "Wesenurfahr", which was first mentioned in 1310.

In 1325, a chapel dedicated to St. Wolfgang was first mentioned in a document. It was a branch church of the young parish of Waldkirchen am Wesen.

This Wolfgang chapel was generously supported by benefactors and supported by foundations. These made it possible to employ a chaplain. Epitaphs on the outside of the current church commemorate three priests: HANNS SCHWENTNER (south side), PAUL PERGER (west side), and HANNS ELMANSBERGER (south side).

In 1721, the church was enlarged. The nave was extended towards the east.

This is how the church has looked since then: single nave, using Gothic walls, vaulted in the Baroque style (barrel vault). The nave has four bays, the choir has two bays with a semicircular end.

The simple building has a small ridge turret with an onion dome. A mount of olives and the sacristy were added on the south side.

There is an oratory on the south side of the choir.

Since the route to the relevant parish church in Waldkirchen am Wesen was very difficult, especially in winter, the people of Wesenufer sought to establish their own parish as early as the 18th century. However, they found little support for this from the relevant episcopal ordinariate in Passau. From 1784 onwards they were at least allowed to keep their own church records.

In 1853 Wesenufer became a parish branch and received its own parish pastor, whose apartment was in the school building (No. 4) (now demolished).

In 1891, Wesenufer was elevated to its own parish after prior state approval by the Episcopal Ordinariate in Linz. As such, it is now the second smallest in the diocese of Linz with just under 300 residents.

In 1899, the construction of its own rectory was completed and consecrated by Bishop Franz Maria Doppelbauer.

In 1997, the interior of the parish church was extensively renovated, in which the population was very enthusiastically involved. This construction project was completed with the consecration of the restored organ (1998) and the installation of the now restored Stations of the Cross pictures.
