The Red Fort is a surrounding tower dating from the 12th century, probably named after the color of the tiles that once covered it. This tower was part of the city's first municipal enclosure, erected under the leadership of Philip II Augustus. Listed in 1972, the Red Fort was recently restored to highlight this medieval vestige. Archaeological excavations have revealed valuable information on its defensive role in the history of Tournai.

The Red Fort ("le Fort Rouge") is actually not a fortress but a tower from the first city wall from the 11th century. The round tower itself is said to date from the 12th century and was built on an older, angular tower. This first wall did not last very long and was already replaced in the 13th century by a larger city wall. With the exception of Fort Rouge, the Tour du Cygne and the Tour de Saint-Georges, this first wall has completely disappeared. The tower fell into disuse and began to decay over the years. It was recently restored and now serves as an exhibition space.

The Red Fort was built at the time when the King of France, Philip II Augustus, was in charge of Tournai. The Red Fort was supposed to help protect the city. From the place where the tower stands you had a good overview and you could see the attacks coming. At first it looked more like a ruin, but a few years ago it was decided to renovate the tower. You can still clearly see that the tower is made of limestone. Now you can enter the tower and watch a movie about the history of Tournai. Also check out the statue of cartoon character Martine (known in the Netherlands as Tiny), which stands near the tower.
