The town hall on the Old Market Square is an elongated, two-story, Gothic, rectangular brick building originally dating back to the 14th century. This building served as a town hall, courthouse, civic center, and food warehouse. The narrow side faced the Old Market Square. This rectangular gable wall, which has not been preserved, featured open arcades with six pointed arches on the ground floor, with the entrance behind it. The rectangular, tall, northeastern entrance tower had two stories and a three-sided turret. The three sides of the turret were divided by eleven vertical pilasters at the corners and between the windows. The adjoining two-story longitudinal building had a gable roof, which was topped on the southwest side by a broad stepped gable with tracery panels. The building fell into disrepair over time, and during the French period it was even used as a stable. From 1808 onwards, the building stood empty for several years, and demolition was considered.

In 1818, the building was fundamentally rebuilt by the architect and court architect Johann Georg Barca for the Mecklenburg Higher Court of Appeal, which had been relocated to Parchim. Barca's renovation radically altered the interior floor plan and exterior appearance. Some Gothic elements of the ruins were retained and supplemented, and new neoclassical architectural elements were added. The arcade on the market square side was removed, and the new main entrance was relocated to the center of the long side facing the shoe market, in the form of a new portal with four two-story round half-columns and a pointed-arch gable above. All window openings were greatly enlarged and given high pointed arches to illuminate the space between the ground and upper floors. Both gables were now designed as stepped gables. The continuous gable roof between them was flatter than that of the previous building.

Parchim Town Hall, located in the heart of the city center, is essentially a Gothic brick building dating back to the 14th century. Among the buildings of the medieval town, the town hall occupied the most important position as the seat of the municipal authorities and a symbol of municipal independence.

After the town hall was renovated from 1817 to 1820 under the construction supervision of the Ludwigslust court and country architect Barca, it underwent another extensive renovation between 1993 and 1997, becoming a special jewel in the historic old town.

The origins of Parchim Town Hall are closely linked to the history of Parchim.
