The Elde-Müritz Waterway, a dam-controlled waterway, runs through Parchim. It connects the Mecklenburg Lake District to the Elbe River, and via the Stör Canal also to Lake Schwerin. The elevation difference from Lake Plau to the Elbe is 49 meters and is controlled by 17 locks. One of these is located in the town of Parchim. Nine locks are automatically controlled, and the control center is also located in Parchim.
This waterway is no longer of commercial importance, but is still used by pleasure craft and excursion boats. It is a federal waterway.

The Parchim Lock is a lock on the Müritz-Elde waterway in Parchim. It is not operated by a lock keeper, but rather by the individual passing through; it is a self-service lock. The lock chamber has sheet pile walls into which ship fenders can slip if they are too small. Therefore, larger fenders should be used or care should be taken to prevent the ship from hitting the lock wall.
