Ars Natura artwork "KaHuPfe" by Sandrino Sandinista Sander (Spangenberg): Since researchers have decoded the genetic code, they have also been able to disassemble it or combine codes. Plants, animals and even the human species are up for grabs. Genetically modified plants and animals have been around for some time and, given their enthusiasm for experimentation, genetic alchemists feel constrained by legal safety regulations. “The world is becoming a laboratory,” says sociologist Ulrich Beck, and it is developing into the scene of a “humanity experiment” in which everyone takes part. And in our highly developed risk society, no one should feel responsible for the consequences of progress. Maybe you will also find pleasure in a creature that unites our favorite animals. After all, it looks quite friendly. Or maybe we're fascinated by the art of genetic engineers resurrecting dinosaurs.

In his book “The Responsibility Principle,” Hans Jonas speaks of the “unleashed Prometheus,” “to whom science gives unprecedented forces and the economy provides the restless drive.” But Prometheus calls for an ethics that, by means of voluntary reins, keeps his power from harming mankind. “Act in such a way that the effects of your action are compatible with the permanence of real human life on earth.” Does humanity have the strength for this responsible ethic? Actually, it looks as if mankind would succumb to every temptation, out of curiosity, but also out of material greed.
