The center of Ratingen is the market place where goods have been offered for at least 1371 times. The weekly market held here every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday is one of the liveliest and most popular far and wide. The market square is determined by the town house (built around 1300) and the church of St. Peter and Paul (see below). Northwest of the market place is a bit hidden the Minoritenkloster (built in 1656).

Every visitor to Ratingen is first led to the marketplace. This ensemble of the market square, the old town house, the early Gothic, three-aisled basilica of St. Peter and Paul and restored townhouses lets the Middle Ages - town elevation 1276 - rise again and is still a pulsating focus in the here and now.
The four main streets of Ratinger, Lintorfer (formerly Angermunder) Straße, Oberstraße, Bechemer Straße and Düsseldorfer (formerly Vowinkler) Straße meet at the market square.
The streets are mentioned in the first Ratinger city book from 1362, as well as the market square, which is referred to here as "forum" and "martte", and the market fountain, the "puteus fori".
