In the past, incoming ships were loaded and unloaded with the two iron cranes. The port was the economic center of the city. In 1156, Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa granted Bamberg the staple right. From then on, every ship passing through Bamberg had to stop and offer its wares for sale in the city for three days.
