North Head is part of the Sydney Harbour National Park. The North Head Quarantine Station is located on North Head, similar to those that existed in every Australian colony and state until the 1980s. It is one of the few quarantine stations of its kind that still exist in Australia today, and an exhibition shows the spread of imported diseases by Europeans and the resulting decline of the indigenous population. Quarantine stations existed in every Australian colony to prevent the spread of smallpox, cholera, Spanish flu, bubonic plague and other infectious diseases. The first quarantine station to be placed in quarantine was in August 1828, on the convict ship Bussorah Merchant with people infected with smallpox. They were housed in tents at Spring Cove on the western side of North Head and guarded by the military.[1] On 14 August 1832, the entire area of 69 hectares[2] was declared a quarantine area by John Burke, Governor of New South Wales, and remained so until 29 February 1984.[3] Permanent buildings were built in 1837.
