With an area of 316 hectares, the Urdenbacher Kämpe is the largest nature reserve in Düsseldorf. It is a typical piece of old Lower Rhine cultural landscape with pollarded willows, fruit trees and valuable wet meadows. The blossoming fruit trees are particularly worth seeing.

"Shaped by flooding - In the Urdenbacher Kämpe, the Rhine is still allowed to flood its floodplain and is not prevented from doing so by dykes, as it is almost everywhere. This is natural flood protection for the cities downstream, because the water masses are held back in the floodplain.

At the same time, the typical floodplain habitats with their changing water levels are preserved here. And their specialized residents benefit from it. Rare plants such as burnet and autumn crocus thrive in the seasonally wet meadows of the Kämpe.

Between the Rhine and the Old Rhine - The Kämpe is framed by the Rhine and its former river bed along the outskirts of the settlement. Where the main stream still flowed 700 years ago, today the Urdenbacher Altrhein takes its course as a stream. an extreme flood in 1374 triggered this relocation of the Rhine."
