On Ameland, the lifeboat used to be pulled into the water at this point by horses. On August 14, 1979, the boat "Windspiel 4" ran aground. An attempt to drag the lifeboat into the water that day went awry and the eight horses drowned. A memorial was erected to them at this point.

The memorial stone is unspectacular, but the sad event is the exact opposite. If you are on Ameland, I recommend visiting this place, ideally at the same time as the demonstration. This way you can get an idea of what the horses did in a storm.
It's unimaginable so many horses buried.
