The oldest of the three church buildings is the local church of St. Peter and Paul, located in the town center and Protestant since the Reformation. It is originally a high Romanesque building from the 12th century, which was later gradually converted into a Gothic style, most recently in the 19th century into a neo-Gothic style. The narrow windows of the tower were designed as defensive loopholes.

The tuff stone monument in the church is particularly interesting, commemorating the 244 seed traders who died abroad in the course of their profession. The associated tuff stone was quarried in the area of the Gönningen lakes.

The parish church in Gönningen was dedicated to the two saints Peter and Paul (Peter and Paul), also known as the "prince of the apostles". Their common memorial day in the calendar of saints is June 29th.

(Chapter 16, Verse 19).
* Paul was initially an opponent of the Christian movement and was not called to the apostleship of Jesus Christ during his lifetime like the other apostles, but was only converted later with the famous "Damascus experience". His attribute is the sword with which he was executed; according to the Roman law of the time, this was a "privilege" (quick death and not, like other types of execution, associated with a long, painful death struggle) that was available to the citizens of Rome.
