The Chemin de la Mâture is a 1200 meter long tunnel carved into the cliff. Its work is ordered by Louis XV to allow the exploitation and the routing of the trees of the steep-sided valley. Below. The trunks of these trees grew extremely straight due to their very vertical exposure to the sun. This verticality thus promised masts of a rare quality to the fleet of the Royal Navy.
