The church was built in the 8th or 9th century and was dedicated to St. Stephen. It remains unclear whether an old church was demolished and the current one built in its place. The oldest part of the current church is probably the Romanesque, three-tiered portal on the lower west wall. It dates from between about 1000 and 1290.

The listed church has been rebuilt several times. A structural feature is the exterior staircase leading to the gallery.
