The oldest written source mentioning this well-preserved moated castle-type feudal castle dates from 1362. Count de Ribaucourt donated the castle to the Royal Association of Historical Residential Cities of Belgium in 1953 to allow the necessary restoration works to begin. The castle was opened to the public in 1967. Besides some valuable frescoes, beautiful tapestries from the 16th century and precious furniture from the 17th-18th century, there is also a remarkable European silver collection (15th-18th century). With more than 800 pieces, it is considered the most important in Europe.
