There has been evidence of a chapel in Erbach with its own baptismal and burial rights since 1060/1072, which belonged to the Eltville parish until 1250. Then Erbach became an independent parish and the chapel became a parish church. Markus has been their patron saint since 1258. Indulgence documents from 1281, 1304 and 1324 indicate a structural extension of the original chapel, which was converted into a hall church.

The conversion into a three-aisled, low hall church three bays long with a small choir took place between 1477 and 1506. The construction apparently began with the west tower, in the basement of which the year 1477 can be found, while the third bay of the south aisle has the year 1506 having.
