Built around 1286, the Fronfeste originally served to fortify the Dresden Gate. However, it was later used as a prison and detention center. Also known as the Büttelturm or Stockhaus, it is the oldest surviving building in the city of Bischofswerda.

The Fronfeste, or gate tower of the former Dresden Gate, probably dates back to the 14th century.
The Fronfeste acquired its present appearance after the city fire of 1813. It is the last remaining tower of the city fortifications.
